Eco News

Our Eco Council - the 'Eco Royal Warriors' - have been busy again this year creating wildlife habitats and involving the whole school through advocacy and our 2nd annual Eco Morning.
In November 2024 our Eco Council grew to 10 members, all full of ideas and motivation! Through subsequent meeting discussions they determined to provide a hedgehog home, bird houses, improve school recycling and continue with composting and litter picking.
Work began with a whole school assembly entirely written and produced by members of the Eco Council which eloquently explained to pupils the issues around climate change, whilst launching a new initiative to help combat single-use plastic pollution. ERA's 'Naked Snack Day' on Tuesdays asks that all pupils and staff only bring in snacks without single-use plastic packaging. To enhance recycling year 6 members delivered a session with Reception class around recycling and others made promotional posters. We also took part in the RSPB's Big School's Bird Watch in February.
As Spring approached we linked up with Easton Royal's local church group to enlist the church grounds as a place to put a hedgehog home and bird houses. A warrior designed a bird house which was used by a parent to pre-cut wood pieces, and this same parent also made a hedgehog home from the Wildlife Trust's design. After-school sessions enabled the group to scout out suitable locations, assemble and decorate the bird houses, as well as to plant wildflower seeds in the school science garden, and put out bird seed and watering stations. During a further session within a school day, the warriors dug out an area and installed the hedgehog home in a corner of the church grounds and made a sign for it.
Our Eco Morning took place on 9th July where parents were invited to join pupils in their house groups for a carousel of nature inspired activities. These included making bug stations around the school grounds with donated bricks and natural materials; clay pots embossed with leaves; painted leaf print murals on big boards; and collages depicting and promoting ERA's Eco Code.
As we enter this new school year we'll again be inviting applications from pupils to join the Eco Council and look forward to seeing what initiatives they inspire, as well as continuing the important work of sustaining our on-going waste management activities and promoting ERA's Eco Code.
Well Done Eco-Royal-Warriors!
